What is the duration of injected solu-cortef (hydrocortisone)?

About 8-12 hours: 8-12 hours is what is referred to as the 'half-life' of this medication. That means that 1/2 of the drug has been metabolized (removed) in this time period. Although half of the dose is still present after this time period, it is understandably much less effective for every hour beyond this. The maximal (usual) effect of this drug, then, is good for the first 8-12 hours.

What's the difference between OTC hydrocortisone and prescription hydrocortisone?

Dr. Leto Quarles

Strength: Otc Hydrocortisone cream is 0.5%. Prescription creams can be 0.5%, 1% and even 2%, and can also come in other forms (ointment, lotion, gel, liquid, spray, etc.). Depending on where you're using it and what condition you're treating, stronger isn't always better, though, so check with your doctor about which is best to use in your particular situation.

Solucortef (hydrocortisone)?: For an endocrinologist, this drug is given by IV or into the muscle during medical emergencies for patients who have adrenal insufficiency. We prescribe it to our patients so that they may administer it at home in the event of such an emergency.

Is this hydrocortisone 2.5% a mild medication or a strong medication?

Mild: It's a very mild weak topical steroid. It's good for use on mild rashes or itching and for babies. Most people with severe itching or rashes need to see a doctor to get a stronger prescription strength topical steroid.

Is there any over counter medicine can treat neurodermatitis? I have ointment containing hydrocortisone 1% here. Thank you very much! eric

Antihistamines: Most important thing is to stop scratching, itching or rubbing. Break the itch-scratch-rash cycle. Helps to take antihistamines (allegra, atarax, benadryl, (diphenhydramine) zyrtec, claritin), dozepin (oral and topical), topical steroids (prescription strength). Sometimes hypnotherapy can help.
