Many possible causes: Endocarditis may result after any episode of bacteremia (when bacteria get into the blood). Classically, "dirty procedures" like dental cleanings or intestinal or genitourinary surgeries were considered the typical immediate causes. It is now thought that endocarditis more commonly results from more simple everyday sources of bacteremia - like chewing your food, for example.
