Black and white: An amalgam filling is silver in color, a composite filling matches the color of your tooth. Pretty easy to tell.

Of course: Dental amalgam fillings are gray or silver in color and are sometimes referred to as silver fillings or mercury fillings. Composite is tooth-colored material.
