I have appendicitis i am 5 week pregnant will it affect my baby?

Relax: In the hands of a well trained surgical team including the anesthesiologist, most women do well and no apparent effect on baby is noted. The medications used in the pre/post operative period may need adjustment because you are pregnant, but this is not uncommon.

Not if well treated: Appendicitis is the most common surgical problem in pregnancy. It should be treated early, with an operation to remove the appendix. This can be done laparoscopically since you are still early in pregnancy. While there is always a risk of birth defects with anesthesia in the early months of pregnancy the risk is very very small - much smaller than the risk of untreated appendicitis.
