Overnight test: Most sleep studies are done at a sleep laboratory. You will show up and they will hook up a bunch of different monitors on you. Then, you are supposed to sleep and they will measure many things about your sleep. They may fit you with a CPAP if you have obstructive sleep apnea.

Sleep study: You will be connected to multiple leads ( with adhesives) to monitor your breathing, oxygen level, sleep position, brain wave activity, blood pressure etc. You will be observed . If there is a severe apnea, they may have you wear a continuous positive airway pressure ( cpap) device to test its efficacy in treating the apnea.

NPSG: An npsg is a formal overnight sleep study. You would be monitored for breathing, muscle activity, heart rate, oxygen level and brainwave activity. Typically an ahi (apnea hypopnea index) is calculated to determine if you are positive. A minimum of an ahi = 5 is needed to be positive. An ahi of 5-14 is mild, 15-29 is moderate and >30 is severe.
