General Surgeon: Most general surgeons are trained in laparoscopic techniques. Not all cholecystectomy patients are candidates, but the vast majority are. I am assuming you have already had workup determining the need for the procedure.

Hospital, ASC: Lap chole-x's are performed under general anesthesia; most people may go home the same day as surgery. They are typically performed in a hospital or an ambulatory surgery center (ASC). Like any operation, it is wise to choose a surgeon with significant experience. As this procedure is performed over 700,000 times a year in the US, you should have no problem finding such a surgeon close by.
