Standard OTC or Rx: Standard over-the-counter medicines for nausea can help. If you are particuarly prone to post-operative nausea and vomiting (ponv) tell your anesthesiologist and they may give you a prescription for a very effective medicine called zofran otd. It's a tablet that dissolves in your mouth, so you don't need to swallow it and keep it down for it to work. Compazine (prochlorperazine) rectal suppository also works.

See below: Upset stomachs after anesthesia, or even full nausea and vomiting is a multi-factorial event. That is to say it can be caused by the anesthetic, the narcotics for pain management, or the surgery itself. I have found that the best management is pre-medication before surgery, and then cautioning the patient to start fluids and solids very slowly. Ice chips, ginger ale, and then work your way up.
