Depends: Most patients with degenerative disease, disc herniations/bulges, facet disease, foraminal stenosis, and spondylosis will not need surgery. The surgery is usually for patients with cord compression (thoracic or neck spine) or symptoms associated with some level of disability form normal life. In short, if you are doing well and don't have spinal cord compression, you will not likely need surgery.
