Prions: Spongiform encephalitis is the name for creutzfeldt–jakob disease, and mad cow disease. These are caused by misfolded proteins, prions, that act as infectious agents.

Great question: Spongiform is used by neuro pathologists to describe the appearance of the brain at autopsy. Many early cases could not be determined as to cause. The patient had a prolonged miserable course and then died. No specific cause could be found, but the brain was full of small holes like a sponge. We now know most are caused by latent viruses or prions.
