See below.: A urine dip stick can detect a urinary tract infection but it cannot differentiate between a bladder or a kidney infection. Bladder infection or cystitis is characterized by burning on urination, urinary urgency and frequency. Kidney infection or pyelonephritis has the same symptoms plus flank pain and often fever and chills.
