Somewhat complicated: The most common cause of irregular periods is pcos, polycystic ovarian syndrome. The underlying problem with pcos is Insulin resistance - cells don't respond correctly to insulin. This causes all sorts of problems including hormonal/irregular periods. Exercise improved cells' ability to recognize and respond normally to insulin. This, in turn, will often normalize periods.
