A member asked:

My son is having a bone marrow test to find the cause of a low platelet count for 7 months. how do they collect the bone marrow?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Several choices: The skin over the testing area is injected with numbing medicine after it is cleaned and sanitized. The infant is usually provided with a form of conscious sedation to decrease their reaction to the event. A thick short needle with an angled bevel is inserted in either the tibia below the knee or the pelvis until the doc feels it enter the bone. The bone marrow is withdrawn into a syringe.
