Giardia lamblia: Giardia lamblia is a flagellated protozoan parasite that colonizes and reproduces in the small intestine, causing giardiasis. You can have both upper and lower GI symptoms including pancreatitis rarely. Often will have alternating bouts of diarrhea and constipation, along with indigestion, abdominal pains, and so on. It can be treated.: Giardiasis is a waterborne illness caused by Giardia parasite. Sx's – there may be no sx's or diarrhea, oily floating stool, gas, nausea, vomiting & abdominal cramps. If untreated it can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration & weight loss. Diagnosis- via blood test for antibodies, stool antigen & checking stool for ova & parasites.Tx can include metronidazole, tinidazole & nitazoxanide.
