Depends on cause: Prisms are prescribed to alleviate doubling of vision and to provide relief for temporary paralysis of a muscle. If the muscle is expected to recover, then the prisms can be abandoned eventually (usually in 6 months). If the doubling is permanent, then the prisms might be needed long term. Surgery might also be considered for this situation.
