A 40-year-old male asked:

He is 3yr old. has swollen tonsils. no temp. difficult sleeping at night. ear pain. on antibiotics two days now. no significant change. advice plz.

May be viral: If the throat and ear infections are caused by a bacteria, they should improve within 2-3 days on the appropriate antibiotic. If it isn't better, it could be that he needs a different antibiotic or that the infection is caused by a virus. Viruses don't respond to antibiotics and just have to run their course. Give lots of fluids, tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen. Call doctor if not better in 2-3 days.
