HSV1 virus: Cold sores on the lips are usually caused by hsv1 virus. Over 80 percent of adults carry this virus. This can be passed by kissing, sharing utensils or drinks or other means. Hsv2 causes genital heroes most commonly and is usually passed by sexual intercourse.
