My 3 year old son has had a 104.2 temp twice in the last month. the er and his dr are saying viral infection and that it is common for his age. is it common?

It happends: As unsettling as this is, the most common cause of a febrile illness in kids is a viral infection. I usually expect at least 3 weeks between episodes. Some kids with strong immune systems run higher temperatures than others and yours may be one. I would keep a diary of these events and discuss them with the kids pediatrician at his next visit to see if other workup is needed.

Yes: Bacterial infection, especially serious ones, is not common in children of his age because of the universal immunization against bacteria used to cause meningitis, blood poisoning, or pneumonia..
