Start simple: I would defer to your gyn, but suggest trying the birth control to see if it helps. If it does not, i think it would be reasonable to consider the more invasive studies you're asking about.

Patience: Ocp's can take several months to decrease endometriosis pain. Surgery becomes a reasonable option after medical management has failed.
