It happens : It depends on exactly how far along you are. It is very possible that you may be a little early and so not able to see or hear the heart beating yet. Usually your doctor will order a follow-up sonogram in a week, and that is usually enough time for the heartbeat to be detectable. Try to be patient and not worry too much. If you still can't see the heart beating after a week, that us concerning.

Be patient: If this was a transvaginal scan (and a gestational sac was seen in the uterus) it is most likely that it is too early to see a heartbeat within the embryo. A heartbeat should be seen with an embryonic crown-rump length of 7mm and a mean sac size of 25 mm.

Maybe: If you are truly 6 weeks, a heart beat should be heard. It's possible, though, that you conceived at a different time? The heart beat is usually perceptible on ultrasound somewhere around 5 1/2 - 6 weeks. But if you're 4 1/2 weeks, they might not hear/see one. Hopefully your doctor scheduled a follow up ultrasound in a few days or weeks to check back and see if you have a pregnancy.
