Go to Psychiatrist: If he has type a\ personality and also a tendeency towards depression he may have bipolar disordder which may be treated with different drugs. Antidepressantts may triigger a maniac episode. That is the reason for being evaluated by a psychiatrist.

Empathy: I suggest that you give him some space and listen to him without interrupting when he is talking. Don't be confrontational even when you disagree with him. Just listen patiently with empathy when he is in a funk. If his depressive symptoms are severe, suggest that he seek professional help, either with a clinical psychologist or a psychiatrist.

Depression & Stress: Make sure your boyfriend is doing everything he can to stay healthy: regular exercise, good eating habits, sleep and relaxation. If he has experienced moderate to severe depression he may need antidepressants, particularly if feeling too low. Type a personalities tend to have a hard time relaxing. Make sure he learns to relax on a regular basis to manage stress and avoid burnout.
