Pause in breathing: Apnea means you stop breathing for more than considered normal, you may end up with lower oxygenation in your brain, headaches and other problems. You may see primary provider first who may consider referral to sleep specialist or pulmonologist. Depending on training neurologists or pulmonoligists may be conducting sleep study to properly diagnose this problem.

Apnea: Apnea is cessation of breathing when you are sleeping. This is either "central" or "obstructive." central is more of a brainstem issue whie obstructive is due to your airway collapsing. In order to breathe again you need to wake yourself up. This is a big problem when you do this every single hour of sleep every night. Ents, pulmonologists, and neurologists are best equipped to treat this.
