Thalassemia vs trait: Thalassemia is al deficiency in the production of one of the globin chains. There are many variants that manifest a wide severity of symptoms from none to transfusion dependence. Simplisticly, disease vs trait for both Alpha and beta thal depends upon the degree of deficiency, which generally correlates with the number of affected alleles. Alpha thal trait (2/4 alleles). Beta thal (1/2 alleles).
