Yes: CMV can cause fetal malformations and serious handicaps, including sensorineural hearing loss, however, most fetuses born to mothers infected with CMV do not develop any problems. You should discuss this with your ob-gyn, especially because testing is now available.

Yes: Most kids acquire CMV in childhood and have a mild flu like illness. If you did you should have antibodies that are evident on a blood test.If not, a CMV infection during pregnancy could pass to baby and cause problems ranging from hearing loss to brain damage or worse.I would check with your pcp or OB and have a CMV titer run, then you can plan accordingly.There is no vaccine at this time.
