It varies: This depends on the extent of dementia, and ability to recognize what has happened. Some people with dementia know very well when someone they love has died. You might take cues from the patient, and listen no matter how often the same story is told. Also answer gently no matter how many times the same question is asked. Continue good care as you always have. Appropriate affection too.
