Can you prevent mobility problems in dementia patients?

Yes: Aging wins in the end but in the meantime regular exercise, weight bearing exercise, and fun group activities can keep the demented elderly moving. Keep the medicine list as short as possible. Provide a well lit, safe environment with no loose items on the floor.

Often: Unitl late in a person's illness, mobility can be encouraged and strengthened as long as someone does not have arthritis, broken bones or other problems causing mobility problems. It is very important for older adults to walk regularly. Walking is very much a use it or lose it issue. However, towards the end of one's life if one has severe dementia, many people just stop walking.
