Bad luck: Gestational diabetes mellitus (gdm) affects 3% to 10% of pregnancies - there may be some genetic predisposition towards developing gdm, but it does not specifically run in families. The risk for gdm does increase with age, prepregnancy weight, previous pregnancy with gdm, and first degree relative with type ii diabetes.Your sisters may have some of the same risks for gdm, but may not develope it.

Anyone can get it: Gestational DM accounts for about 7% of all pregnancies in the US. Anyone can get it and there are risk factors (mentioned by Dr. Higginbotham) that can increase your risk of getting it. One thing for sure, if you have gestational DM, you are at risk for developing DM lifelong (not just during pregnancy). Thus if you have been diagnosed with GDM, get check for DM every 3 years lifelong.
