Team approach: This is a complex disorder that should be treated by a team of physicians rather than one doctor. Your pcp will most likely refer you to a mental health professional experienced in this issue. Once the mental health provider feels you are psychologically ready, he/she will send you to an endocrinologist who will work with you on hormonal replacement. Surgery is the last steps. It's a long process.

Hopefully, support!: Your primary care doctor can be your best advocate. But if they're not familiar with transgender medicine, ask for a referral (wpath is a great resource). Your provider will likely want to see a letter from your therapist indicating that you're clear on this decision. Hormone therapy works very well - especially in younger clients. Our trans clients are typically very happy with their transitions.

Hopefully support: Not a lot of docs are comfortable with this. Ask your general doc for referral to a mental healthcare specialist and a doctor that specializes in prescribing cross-hormones. This doctor will discuss in detail what the risks and benefits of hormones are. Please check the website from "san francisco center for excellent transgender health" for information!
