Could be...: Dry eye - bad this time a year with allergies is a good possibility - and should feel better with lubricating eye drops, but if that does not correct it - my worry would be a foreign body or scratch of your cornea - which would need to be diagnosed by md and treated appropriately - before causes damage...

Foreign body: Since it is recent onset and in only one eye, sounds more like something is in your eye. You can try otc artificial tears just to rule out dryness. It may even wash out any foreign material. If no improvement, you should see an eye md.

Foreign body: If it is one eye and you cannot open it without pain and is painful on movement you may have a foreign body under the upper eyelid that is not visible. Your eye md should evert your eyelid and look.
