Not the hernia: A hiatal hernia is when the opening in the diaphragm that the esophagus passes through stretches out and the stomach can go up in to the chest cavity. This is just in front of the spine, straight back and slightly above the tip of the breast bone. You can't touch the area of a hiatal hernia, and generally only large hernias cause symptoms. Hope this helps.

Hiatal hernia: Hiatal hernias are high up in your abdominal cavity and under your sternum. You really can't push on it from the outside or cause the hiatal hernia to reproduce pain by pushing on your belly. The pain your are feeling is most liked from something else, possibly an abdominal wall hernia or some other intaabdominal problem.
