HCG assay: Hcg is the hormone produced by the placental cells, and its level can be measured to diagnose or monitor a pregnancy. Hcg can be detected by commercial blood test as early as 5 days after implantation, or 7-10 days using the urine test. Because hcg's structure is similar to lh's, it can also be used to induce ovulation. After an HCG injection, the medication is completely elimnated after a week.

At what stage is chorionic villus sampling done?

10-12 weeks: Chorionic villus sampling (cvs) obtains cells from the fetoplacenta for testing at 10-12 weeks of pregnancy, amniocentesis obtains fetal skin/urine cells at 16-18 weeks. Higher risks for miscarriage (2-3% for cvs, <0.5% or negligible for amnio) balance against the cvs advantage of testing before a women "shows, " preserving the privacy of pregnancy (testing).
