Urticaria: Acute urticaria is defined as hives that come/go over 24 hrs lasting less than 6 wk. 50% of the time we don't know what the cause is, the most common causes we know of are virus related, medications, food allergies, contact allergies and bug bites. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) every night and Allegra every morning can help the symptoms. But allergy testing by an allergist can be helpful in avoiding future outbreak.

Hives or rash: Hives come & go. They tend to pop out one place & fade away to be replaced by others in another location. They do not leave bruising or a rash that stays. The medical name for hives is urticaria. Anything under a month is considered acute. Hives can be from viral infections, drug allergy, or food allergies. Often a cause is not identified. Allergies only tigger about 10%.
