Depends!: Need a program that combines cardio- training with muscle building. I like formal gyms for people starting initially, since you have people with varying degrees of expertise who can help. Plus the modest financial commitment keeps you going. Get a heart rate monitor and try to get your heart rate to about 130 bpm. I would recommend a circuit weight regimen or a stationary bike!

Slowly: Although "unfit" is relatively due to your age, i'd recommend starting slow with walking and healthy eating. Restrict and abstain from smoking cigarettes, drug use, and alcohol (it's a toxic!). Build from walking with increased activities and games (stationary basketball shooting, light weight lifting, etc). One of the best ways is to get a trainer. Hope this helps!
