Lowered resistance: When your resistance to infection is lower your gums are more susceptible to infection, even if they are not the original problem. Take special care of them even if you don't feel like it and they will feel better.

Infection: Gum disease is an infection, so there may be that correlation; or you have a virus and that can cause some gum pain or sores also.
