Inspire vs expire: Coughing and shortness of breath are common symptoms for asthma. Difficulty breathing on expiration is typical of asthma, while difficulty breathing on inspiration can be suggestive of vocal cord dysfunction. This is when the vocal cords close instead of open when taking a breath. It can occur with asthma or not with asthma. A pulmonologist, allergist or ENT can assist with the diagnosis.
