Could be bursitis: Pain on the outside of the hip is likely bursitis. Bursa are sacs of fluid which lie over bony prominences that protect the skin above them. Bursitis occurs when these sacs of fluid can become irritated. Bursitis may not show up on an xray or mri. Bursitis is typically treated with a steroid injection and then exercises are done to prevent recurrence. See your doctor.

See details: Have you seen an orthopedist? If this is truly hip pain and not bursitis or back pain, then an MRI of the hip is the next step.

Consider Impingment: Please see an orthopedic surgeon or a sports medicine physician. After their examination, if it is felt to be the hip, something to consider is hip labral problems or impingement (pinching) of soft tissue by the hip joint. If there are more questions about the anatomy of the hip, then a hip mr arthrogram may be helpful, especially if a regular hip MRI has already been completed.
