Doctor can evaluate: 96 degrees f is too low, and 104 f is too high, so neither are normal. Be sure the thermometer is working properly and being used correctly. A primary care doctor can evaluate, and will want to know all the details and symptoms associated with this. Possible reasons include infection, inflammatory or autoimmune reactions, etc...

Not normaly.: Normal temperature in a 20 yr male should be 37 deg celcius or 98 deg f. There is a large variability in the technique used to measure temperature. 40 is high. There are medical conditions which can cause this. Please get help.
