Variable: Recovery from the pe's can take anywhere from a few days to several months. There isn't really anything that speeds recovery in terms of shortness of breath; the main goal of therapy is preventing another pe by using an anticoagulant drug. Unless you are experiencing deterioration, seeing a pulmonologist is unlikely to change your course.
