Esophagus: The esophagus passes from chest to abdomen through the esophageal hiatus in the diaphragm. If it slides up and down or sticks out of place in the hiatus or next to the hiatus it can cause symptoms of irritation chest pain, reflux etc. The cardia is the name for the upper part of the stomach that slides with the lower esophagus. Some are treated medically and the worst may be treated surgical call.

Hiatal hernia: I believe you are referring to a hiatal hernia which when small cause no symptoms. When large, they can cause difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or ulcers. These are also called paraesophageal hernias, and are often misunderstood and underestimated by the medical community. Need an upper GI contrast study, and maybe other tests to make the diagnosis.
