Fatigue: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can cause fatigue from overuse in most people. Claritin does not usually have this issue. Antihistamines also can cause urinary retention due to their anticholinergic effects. As with any medication, they should only be taken if their benefits outweigh their risk for the problem being treated. If someone has significant allergy symptoms, taking a non-sedating antihistamine is helpful.
