Hamstrings: Spasm is very common after total knee. Posterior releases are often necessary to make the knee straight. The pain should improve over the next 7-10 days. Keep your knee straight as much as you can when resting. Make sure you ask your surgeon about blood cloths.

Surgical procedure: The knee structures have numerous nerve endings. Some of those structures are surgically removed during a total knee (meniscii, ligaments, bone, capsule). Pain is a result of the surgical removal, the resulting bleeding, and swelling that occur. It is generally felt in the area of damage and resolves as healing progresses. Stretching the inflamed structures also can cause pain in the back.
