Patient preference: Studies show that 3 years after disc herniation outcomes for patients are the same whether or not they had surgery. Reasons to consider surgery over conservative treatnemet include: weakness, bowel/bladder dysfunction, and pain that is intractable. No surgeon can offer you a guarantee. The goal of surgery is ultimately to take pressure off the nerve and prevent chronic weakness.
