COPD: COPD is an acronym for a number of diseases that lead to progressive lung function loss, breathing problems, and disability in many patients at risk due to chronic inflammation caused by noxious stimuli-- like smoking. The stage of COPD is crucial in determining risk of premature loss of life and a pulmonary function test is needed. The more severe, the greater the risk potential.

Not terminal: COPD is decreased air flow with little reversibility, usually related to long term smoking. Stopping smoking and adhering to a bronchodilator regimen will improve symptoms as well as pulmonary rehab. However the lung will continue to decline as a function of age but at a much slower rate than while smoking.
