>1 week: Diarrhea is usually self limiting however there several cases in which a parasite or 'bad bug' (bacteria) may be infecting you. The best test is a stool sample for culture & parasites ordered by your personal physician.

Diarrhea: Most causes of diarrhea are self limiting, including etec (traveler's diarrhea.) be sure to drink plenty of fluids that contain glucose and electrolytes (such as gatorade.) if the diarrhea lasts longer than a week, changes, or other symptoms become unbearable consult your physician.

A week unless...: Most acute viral causes of diarrhea can last a week; some bacterial causes can last a week. If you have ongoing symptoms, high fever, bleeding, difficulty keeping up intake with the output, see your doc. Parasites always a possibility. Other GI causes of diarrhea, e.g. Inflammatory bowel, celiac sprue, would have longer history than a week.
