Should my cervix have been measured prior to getting pregnant to avoid complications of an incompetent cervix?

No: Some might argue that checking for a short cervix prior to pregnancy would alert one to possible problems with incompetent cervix. The cervix changes so much in pregnancy that one can get a false sense of security if early measurements are nl. It is our practice to check a cervical length at the first trimester screening ultrasound. If the measurement is <2.5cm then treatment is discussed.

Rare condition: True cervical incompetence is a rare condition. And measuring cervical length by ultrasound is silly when it is as simple as a pelvic exam to assess the cervix. But it's a "sign of the times" of depending too much on technology which then causes needless worry and further interventions in many cases.
