Pneumonia: Pneumonia is a complication of surgery. It is more likely in patients who have their chests opened. The surgical team takes steps to try and prevent pneumonia but nothing is perfect.

Known complication: When surgery? In the first few days to weeks , inability to clear with coughing , can lead to congestion, atelectasis and pneumonia. Respiratory care, incentive spirometry, and antibiotics are common treatments.
