Missing a period: The most common reason for "skipping a period", other than pregnancy is not ovulating (releasing an egg). There are a number of reasons this could happen and if it continues, a discussion with your ob/gyn would be helpful. You're correct, if you aren't ovulating you won't get pregnant.
