The best way to : Prevent infection is not to cut in the first place. Please get professional help if you are cutting. Yes, the self- lacerations can become infected. What is your tetanus status? If the cuts are very deep - they may require suturing. I really can not provide you education about how to best cut yourself. Please look into dialectical behavior therapy. Take care.
