A member asked:

Regarding spleen removal surgery - what are the risks and precautions?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Vaccines and blood: Spleen removal can make one susceptible to some infections afterward, so vaccines for pneumococcus, h. Influenza, and meningococcus are necessary, either pre op or as you leave the hospital. During the surgery , blood loss, injury to the pancreas, or stomach injury are possible. Unless the spleen is massive it can probably be done laparoscopically. Good luck.
