I have just been diagnosed with graves disease (april 1), are there any benefits to having the thyroid gland removed?

Easier treatments: Treatment with radioactive iodine is less invasive and generally effective. Surgery is usually not the first choice. See this site for more info. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/graves-disease/ds00181.
