Obstruction: By a stone can cause a kidney to enlarge. Obstruction over time can cause damage to the kidney. That damage can occur quickly if there is additional factor of infection. Best to see a urologist who can best determine if a stone will pass on its own or needs additional treatment, such as lithotrypsy. A urologist can also determine the significance of an enlarged kidney not caused by obstruction.
